Murray's Minute -- Feb. 10
WTOP's own Tim Murray is covering hockey at the Winter Games. Here's his daily update from PyeongChang.
Raise you hand if you know what the skiathlon is.
Before today, my hand would've been down (and even now it's now risen without confidence). From what I gathered, it's cross-country skiing that features two different techniques -- Classical and Freestyle -- and halfway through the race you switch skis.
I watched Sweden's Charlotte Kalla win the 7.5km + 7.5km Skiathlon this afternoon in PyeongChang. I sat outside and did updates of the event on Westwood One. Then afterwards I was able to grab an interview with her.
After every event, athletes walk through the mixed zone. It's basically a row of reporters from all over the world asking questions. Poor Charlotte -- she had just won the gold medal after 40 plus minutes of skiing in sub-30 degree weather, then she had to talk to reporters OUTSIDE for over an hour.
American Jessie Diggins finished fifth. Later this week, Diggins has a real shot at becoming the first American woman to medal in cross-country skiing.
