In search of a killer
In May 2013, a cold case detective with Montgomery County re-discovered a 1975 interview between Lloyd Lee Welch and police, and noticed that Welch's photo was similar to a composite sketch from a witness. That connection led police to redouble their efforts to solve the long cold case and to investigate Welch as a possible suspect.
Police Chief Tom Manger said that as part of that effort, in the past two years investigators have:
spent 16,000 hours working on the case
served more than 50 search warrants
issued dozens of subpoenas
analyzed "reams" of documents
collected numerous items of evidence
conducted more than 100 interviews and interrogations
